Student Visa
In order to apply for a Student Visa, you must first be accepted to study full time in a registered course offered at one of Australia schools, technical colleges or universities.
A student visa provides you with a temporary resident visa and is usually valid for the duration of your nominated course. After you have completed your studies, you will be required to depart Australia by the date specified on your visa, unless you make a valid application for another temporary or permanent residency visa in Australia.
Students who complete a course of study in Australia may be eligible to apply for Australian Permanent Residency under the Skilled Migration Program.
If you have recently completed a course of study in Australia and are seeking Australian Permanent Residency, you must apply for a visa within 6 months of receiving you notification of results.
If you do intend to apply for your Permanent Residence, you do not need to wait until you have completed your studies to find out the legal requirements for applying for a Permanent Visa, in fact, we encourage you to seek advice and assistance and find out if you qualify now.
To be granted a Student Visa, you will be assessed against a number of factors which vary according to the Passport that you hold and the type of Student visa that you are applying for.
Student Visa applications may be assessed against some of the following requirements,
- Your financial ability to support yourself and any dependents as well as cover the costs of travel, health insurance and your proposed tuition in Australia,
- Your level of English language ability,
- Your previous academic record,
- Your immigration history,
- Your proposed course of study, and,
- Whether your proposed course of study is consistent with your previous level of education and relevant to any previous studies.
In addition to these requirements, you will need to demonstrate that,
- You and any dependent family members, are able to satisfy health requirements,
- You and any dependent family members, are able to satisfy character requirements,
- You and any dependent family members have taken out compulsory private health, insurance for your stay in Australia. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
